History of Hummus

Pronounced hum.us or hom.mos. Hummus is an Arabic and Greek dish made from cooked chickpeas, sesame tahini, lemon juice, garlic and select spices depending on the flavor profile. The word hummus is actually the Arabic word for chickpea.
Hummus is used throughout the Middle East, the Mediterranean, as well as many parts of India. There is no way of knowing where its origin began though it is presumed to be somewhere in the Middle East. The chickpea was used as food by our hunter-gatherer ancestors tens of thousands of years ago and was cultivated around 7,000 years ago in the Middle East. The actual history of hummus is unknown. We do know that many versions of hummus have existed for thousands of years.
